Why is marxism used as a synonym for communism/socialism nowadays?

Correct me if i'm wrong but isn't communism just based off of the general idea of marxism. I don't think it's fair that people always ociate Karl Marx with inventing communism as we know it today, after all, weren't all his ideas and writings just proposals, what ifs, etc?
