What color should my hair be before dying it purple?

I know from experience that if you want to dye your hair an exotic color that it is best to bleach it then wait a day or so to dye it. I had it happen to me, I had it blond and dyed it an exotic color and it didn;t work at all! so I bleached it then did it and it was perfect! Goodluck.
