When I converted my El Camino, I didn't worry with any of that. I put both linkages on the transmission. I pinned the stock U to the B&M linkage. This way when you shift on the floor, the column still rotates. Doing this still utilizes your ignition switch lock, your back up lights, your neutral start switch, and the gear selection indicator on the dash. I think it's the right way to do it, I don't like to change more than necessary...especially column wiring.
